VR Designs DC:Community Project updated to v0.93

A screenshot of a typical map for VR Designs Decisive Campaign Series
Get yourself the latest update of VR Designs DC:Community Project. Here are the changes & improvements - "Added Scale Mode 2.5 km / hex to the VR Basic Library (more air range, lower stack limit, less lethality, slower entrench) and the option to make rounds increase with Hours instead of Days. Masterfile now has Artillery defined as movement type for Guns. It has been set to the same values as the previous Foot movement type of the Guns. This thus changes nothing, but allows the scenario designer to overrule the movement cost of Guns using the Custom Move Cost Tables of the VR Basic Library. People statistic of the Commanders is shown in the Simple Editor now (remember that proper scenario design means the same people for all commanders in one officer library)."

General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck’s East Africa Campaign

Maneuver Warfare on the Serengeti, is an interesting thesis  by F. Jon Nesselhuf. "General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck’s East African Campaign was a conventional war of movement. Lettow based his operations on the military principles deduced from his thorough German military education and oversea deployments to China and German South West Africa."

Marshal Tukhachevsky and the "Deep Battle"

Deep Battle: The Brainchild of Marshal Tukhachevskii
An Analysis of Operational Level Soviet Tank and Mechanized Doctrine, 1935-1945, by Peter J. Vlakancic. "Gluboky boi (Глубокий бой). Those two words vividly describe the doctrinal concept of Marshal of the Soviet Union Mikhail N. Tukhachevsky. In English we would call it 'deep battle.' Although promulgated by the marshal and his students throughout the Red Army in the early 1930s, it was not to survive Stalin's purges. Nor was the marshal. The death of Tukhachevsky, along with hundreds of junior commanders who might have put the doctrine into practice, heralded a period of intellectual stagnation and the disastrous performance of the Red Army in the opening battles of the Great Patriotic War."

Drive to the Dnieper | The Soviet 1943 summer campaign

This study, by Steve Robert Waddell, examines Soviet military operations in the latter half of 1943. The Battle of Kursk and the drive to the Dnieper are good examples of Soviet operational planning and practice. After halting the German assault forces at Kursk with a deliberately defensive posture the Soviet forces launched a series of counterattacks. The initial Soviet operations culminated in the liberation of Orel and Kharkov. The drive to the Dnieper commenced and the German forces were driven behind the river.

The Defence and Evacuation of the Kuban Bridgehead | Jan-Oct 1943

OKH Situation Map Kuban Bridgehead 04/1043"The operations in the Kuban bridgehead, the subject of this thesis, can certainly be included in the ranks of the forgotten battles. Indeed the entire campaign in the Caucasus during 1942-3 is often viewed as merely a footnote to the Battle of Stalingrad, even though the oilfields were the primary objective of Operation Blue, the Wehrmacht’s 1942 summer offensive, and the forces sent to the Volga were initially intended to act as a screen for the advance to the south. The Kuban bridgehead, which was held by the German Seventeenth Army from January to October 1943, receives
even less attention." By David R. Galbraith
